Helpful Advice from Preusser Jewelers for Protecting Valuable and Vintage Jewelry

Preusser Jewelers: Tips for Protecting Valuable and Vintage Jewelry

Vintage Jewelry Valuable Jewelry Box

Whether your most cherished piece of jewelry is a valuable collector’s item, a family heirloom, or a particular piece you simply love, protecting your items and ensuring that they remain in good condition is important. It can take some planning, attention to detail, and occasionally some help from professionals, but protecting your favorite pieces of jewelry will ensure lifelong enjoyment and the preservation of the special value they have for you. Read on in today’s blog from Preusser Jewelers for helpful advice for protecting your valuable and vintage jewelry.

Be Careful When Wearing Your Jewelry

When you are planning to wear your favorite piece of jewelry, it is important to think ahead and anticipate if there is a chance that the item may be damaged. Planning ahead and taking simple steps to protect your jewelry will help ensure it is safe and secure. It may be something as simple as tucking a delicate necklace under your blouse before leaving the house on a rainy day. Perhaps an heirloom necklace has a clasp that sometimes gets caught in your hair and comes undone, so it is necessary to plan ahead and wear an updo hairstyle to keep the necklace safe. Make sure to avoid wearing your favorite jewelry when you are gardening, exercising, or using astringent cleaning products.

Be Careful When Cleaning Your Jewelry

There is a lot of advice about cleaning jewelry available out there, and not all of it is good advice for cleaning valuable or vintage items. Even widely used jewelry cleaning products are not safe to use on valuable or vintage pieces. The safest course of action is to use a dry jewelry cleaning cloth. If you do use moisture of any kind to clean vintage jewelry, simply use water. If your vintage or valuable jewelry requires more extensive cleaning, turn to a trusted professional, such as the experts at Preusser Jewelers.

Store Your Jewelry Safely

When you return home with your cherished jewelry items, make sure that you put them away safely. That means putting them in a dry, cool, soft place, such as a fabric-lined jewelry box. For extra protection, put individual pieces in separate pouches, made of soft natural fabric such as cotton or velvet. If you are traveling with your jewelry, make sure each piece is stored separately and securely, to prevent damage caused by friction between pieces. For items of jewelry that are especially valuable to you, it may be worth considering using a locked safe or a safe deposit box for storage.

Have Your Jeweler Inspect Items Twice a Year

Even if you take wonderful care of your valuable and vintage jewelry, it is recommended to take the items for inspection twice a year by a trusted jeweler. This can prevent small problems from becoming big problems. It may take a little extra time, but the careful inspection of your jewelry will ensure a lifetime of enjoyment.

What does she love already?

Is there a particular piece of jewelry that she already loves? Perhaps a favorite pair of drop earrings with uniquely colored diamonds. Perhaps a beloved tennis bracelet, with simple modern style in white gold. Look for items that she already loves, and draw on the features of those items to find new pieces that she will enjoy just as much. If you are in doubt, take a picture of her favorite pieces and consult with our experienced in-house design studio. We will help you select the perfect piece to complement her collection.

What gemstones does she prefer?

As you consider the pieces of jewelry in her collection and the items that she enjoys wearing most, take note of the gemstones that she prefers. Perhaps she selects only diamonds for her rings and earrings. Perhaps she has a number of emeralds in her collection, a beautiful complement to her striking green eyes. Consider the gemstones that she loves, and use this information to guide your choice of the perfect gift.

Does she prefer a particular precious metal?

There are many different types of precious metal that can be used for creating jewelry. From Platinum to silver to gold, the particular precious metals that she prefers will be an important part of your selection of her gift. Take note of the precious metals she prefers, for rings, earrings, necklaces, and bracelets, and choose complementary precious metals for her special gift.

Advice for Choosing Gemstones to Complement Your Eye Color

Choosing Gemstones to Complement Eye Color

Emerald Gemstone Necklace Earring

There are many ways that the perfect piece of jewelry can complement the natural beauty of the person wearing it. Designs featuring complementary colors draw in the observer and guide their vision through each distinctively colored element of your style. Choosing jewelry with colorful gemstones that complement the wearer’s eyes is a gorgeous way to unify the beauty of the style with the beauty of the wearer. Read on in today’s blog from Preusser Jewelers to discover all the ways that your choice of gemstone can complement that natural beauty of your eye color.

Complementary Gemstones for Blue Eyes

When choosing gemstones to complement blue eyes, take the time to really look at your eyes and consider what shade of blue they are. The subtle differences in the shades of blue in your eyes can help guide your choice of gemstones. For those with light, sky blue eyes, consider complementary shades of the pale blue Topaz. For those with bright, brilliant blue eyes, the vibrant blue of Sapphire is a lovely choice. If your eyes have darker shades of blue, consider the deeply hued blue Diamond.

Complementary Gemstones for Brown Eyes

Brown eyes offer amazing and breathtaking options for complementary gemstones! Red gemstones, such as Ruby and Garnet, are a beautiful complement to all shades of brown eyes. For lighter, honey-colored brown eyes, consider warm colors in tones of the sunset, such as the orange and yellow hues of Amber or Yellow Sapphire. Deep and dark brown eyes benefit beautifully from the striking contrast of Turquoise.

Complementary Gemstones for Green Eyes

Green eyes are often very striking and beautiful, and so are the gemstones that match! For complementary styles, choose green gemstones such as Emerald, Jade, and Peridot. The bright blue-green color of Turquoise is also a lovely complement. For a striking contrast, consider the red of Ruby within a gold setting.

Complementary Gemstones for Hazel Eyes

Hazel eyes offer a subtle variety of hues, with many options for complementary colors. Often featuring hints of green, gold, and light brown, hazel eyes are beautifully complemented by the many shades of green in Emeralds and Peridot gemstones. Gold is a beautiful choice for your setting, a lovely complement to your choice of gemstones.

Exploring the Design Elements of Modern Bridal Jewelry

Modern Bridal Jewelry Design Elements

Bridal Jewelry Bride Earring

It can be surprisingly difficult to define exactly what makes a particular piece of bridal jewelry “modern”. The term has been used for decades, through different eras and trends of design. However, there are unifying themes that can help to build a definition of modern jewelry and guide your search for the perfect modern bridal style. In today’s blog from Preusser Jewelers, we will discuss design elements in bridal jewelry that make a perfect complement to a modern bridal style.

Stylish Yet Simple Elements of Modern Bridal Jewelry

Modern jewelry design, like modern home design, is characterized by an exploration of the beauty in simplicity. Look for clean lines and natural geometric shapes with flow. For example, a simple drop earring with a single pearl suspended by a thin filament of platinum, which moves gently as an echo of the graceful movements of the woman who wears it.

The minimalist aesthetic of modern jewelry is often described as of the future, in the same way that the clean neutral design of an iPhone feels of the future. The modern style speaks to a new era of simplicity, with less reliance on grandiosity, filigree and contrived detail.

Delicate and Airy Designs for Carefree Modern Style

Where classic styles of jewelry are larger and ornate with baroque detail, modern styles are delicate, light and carefree. Classic styles feature heavily wrought gold settings with large eye-catching gemstones, for earrings that weigh heavy and stoic. Modern styles feature airy settings with smaller and more subtle gemstones, for earrings that might move gently with a mild breeze.

Understated Materials that Accentuate Form

As mentioned above, modern design reduces the emphasis on large and luminous gemstones in favor of more subtle designs. Where classic jewelry has been designed to capture the eye with large gemstones and wow-factor, modern jewelry is designed to subtly draw the observer in with shape and flow, inducing the same captivation that one might experience viewing abstract sculpture. While the striking hues of yellow gold are traditional, the understated look of platinum or white gold makes a subtle yet striking complement to a simple and beautiful modern bridal style.

Why Get a Jewelry Appraisal

Why Get a Jewelry Appraisal

You may have heard about getting a jewelry appraisal before, but what are they and why should you get one? Getting a jewelry appraisal is actually more important than you might think. Today in the Preusser Jewelers blog, we’ll explain why this is the case.

What is an Appraisal?

A jewelry appraisal verifies certain aspects about your diamond and assigns an overall valuation to the ring. This means your appraiser will determine how much the metal and stone(s) are worth according to current market value.

Why Should I Get an Appraisal?

The primary reason you should get a jewelry appraisal is for insurance reasons. The price of jewelry will fluctuate throughout the years, so if you need to make an insurance claim, you may not recover the full value if you don’t have a recent appraisal.

An appraisal is the only thing that the insurance company will use to determine your compensation if the ring is lost, damaged, or stolen. It won’t matter if you’ve conducted business with a particular insurer for a significant length of time, or even if you have the sales receipt for the ring. In order to provide you with appropriate compensation, your insurer will require a professional appraisal.

Don’t lose out on all of this money just because you didn’t get a jewelry appraisal. Just as you take care to regularly clean and maintain your jewelry, you should also regularly seek an appraisal so you always have an accurate valuation in case of emergency. It’s recommended to get an appraisal at least every 2 years. This should be sufficient to keep you up to date.

What Metal Should You Pick for Your Engagement Ring

Choosing the Right Metal for Your Engagement Ring

Gold and Platinum Rings

One of the first things you’ll decide when choosing an engagement ring is what kind of metal you want it to be. You have a wide variety of options to choose from, but today in the Preusser Jewelers blog, we focus on platinum and gold rings. These are two of the most popular engagement ring options, so it’s likely that you’ll choose one of these.

Platinum Rings

Platinum is one of the most precious metals, and it is actually more rare than gold. For this reason, platinum rings are one of the most popular choices for engagement rings and wedding rings. This fine metal complements the diamonds and helps to showcase all the 4 C’s of your stone. Platinum is exceptionally durable, too, so you can expect that with the proper care, it will retain its beauty for years to come. It also happens to be hypoallergenic, so it is suitable for all.

Gold Rings

Gold is also a very popular choice for engagement rings. While higher karats yield a bolder, richer color of gold, they are not suitably durable for daily wear. Gold that is supported by other metals like silver, copper, zinc, and nickel, offers more durability and beautiful color variations. If you want a gold engagement ring, you’ll be able to choose from yellow gold, white gold, and rose gold. For the most part, choosing between these three options will come down to preference. Each color will look beautiful when all is said and done, so go with the color you love the most.

Engagement Rings from Preusser Jewelers

Choosing the metal for your engagement ring is a big decision. You want to choose something that you will love for years to come. Remember, platinum and gold aren’t your only metal options for your engagement ring. Other metals available include palladium, silver, titanium, zirconium, tungsten, and steel.

These other options have their own features and benefits, so consult with your jeweler when deciding what is best for you. To get an engagement ring you’ll love for the rest of your life, come visit us at Preusser Jewelers today, and let us create something that’s perfectly and uniquely yours. Our reputation for excellence extends all the way back to our opening in 1850. Come experience the difference in care and attention that 168 years in business can make. Diamond Shapes for Your Ring

Popular Shapes of Diamonds

Diamond ring on finger

There are many stylistic choices that go into picking out a ring. You have to choose the setting, the metal, and of course, the diamond. This includes choosing a shape for your diamond. Today in the Preusser Jewelers blog, we’ll highlight some of our favorite shapes.

Considerations to Keep in Mind

Before choosing your diamond shape, you should keep a few things in mind. First, if you already have your setting picked out, you’ll want the diamond to complement the rest of the ring. Certain shapes might look better with certain settings. Certain shapes will also complement your hands in different ways. For instance, a square shape may help long fingers appear shorter. In the end, you should just go with your favorite shape, since it’s your ring, but it doesn’t hurt to consider these factors.

Each of these shapes comes with their own unique sets of features and benefits. Certain shapes will bring out aspects of the 4 C’s that other shapes might not. For example, marquise cuts emphasize carat weight, while emerald cuts maximize color and clarity. So this will be another factor of your decision — out of cut, color, clarity, and carat weight, what is most important for you to emphasize?

Round Cut

This is the most popular diamond shape and one most people are familiar with. This shape highlights the brilliance of the jewel.

Princess Cut

This is another diamond cut that has a unique color and brilliance because of its shape. These are typically square or rectangular in shape.

Oval Cut

These diamonds are shaped to be especially brilliant while complementing slender fingers with their rounded shape.

Marquise Cut

This shape is designed to emphasize the size of a diamond while also helping to give the appearance of longer, more slender fingers.

Emerald Cut

This shape has a unique rectangular appearance. The large step facets reflect off each other to bring out the color and clarity of the stone.

We get this question all the time.  Today I had a client who’s engagement ring had lost the center diamond, (she found it !)  and after looking at the prongs, I could easily see they were worn out, and being worn out, there wasn’t any support left to hold her diamond properly.  I asked her when she last had it checked, and she said never, why should she, the ring was expensive, it should last!  When did you get it, I asked.  She said 12 years ago (!)  I’m not sure why the price would affect the durability, but people often think so.  It truly doesn’t matter if it has a high value, or not.  Metals can wear down over time, and rings that are worn day in and out, take a beating.  Client’s think they aren’t doing anything to cause wear, but daily activities will put wear and tear on the jewelry you wear every day.  You can save yourself  a headache, (and heartache), by coming to see us at least twice a year.  Then we can let you know if your jewelry is okay,  or recommend what needs to be repaired.  Think of your car and getting the oil changed, or going to the dentist.  Preventative maintenance!  Bracelets are another style that can really take a beating.  Earrings and necklaces, not so much, but they still should be looked at.  We don’t charge for this.  Jewelry almost always has very strong memories associated with it, which makes it very emotional.  Losing a piece because something wore out can be heartbreaking.  Be wise, and come in and have it checked and cleaned, really is a no-brainer.  Besides, it will look fantastic!
